RADIO FREE WILLY: WHALES GET THEIR OWN RADIO STATION

VANCOUVER, B.C. (Wireless Flash) – Is the world ready for an All-Whale, All The Time radio format?

Believe it or not, the Vancouver Aquarium in Vancouver, Canada, is starting a 24-hour radio station called “Orca-FM” which will broadcast the live grunts, groans and clicks of killer whales off the coast of British Columbia.

The audio for Orca-FM will come from a microphone that is dangling in the water near Robson Bright, a popular spot for killer whales who like to rub their bodies on underwater pebbles in the area.

Although whales are the only “official” on-air talent, listeners to Orca-FM may occasionally hear loud whistles of passing cruise ships.

The low-power transmitter – which will sign on next Wednesday (July 22) at 11 a.m. Pacific time – only has a range of about 9 miles, but a spokesperson say there are plans to put the Orca-FM audio feed on the internet.
